7 Simple Techniques that Create a Huge Impact on Makeup Looks

Makeup techniques abound these days.

When you visit social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube, you will find the many different ways people apply makeup to achieve various stunning looks. Some of these techniques seem a little over the top but when they work effectively in transforming a face, you simply cannot help but give them a try.

However, simpler techniques often prove as effective and, more often than not, even better especially when it comes to keeping looks fresh. Listed below are seven of them — makeup techniques anybody can execute flawlessly for a polished look every day.

1. Use a pea-sized amount of pore minimizing primer

Apply a pea-sized amount of primer after spreading skin cream across your face. This is enough to create a hydrated and smooth base for your makeup, and you can be sure that the primer will not clog your pores.

Concentrate the product on areas where you have bigger pores. Press it in instead of rubbing the primer across your face; doing the latter would cause it to flake and make foundation application tricky.

2. Avoid pressing in foundation and concealer with a makeup sponge

If you like to apply foundation and concealer using a Beautyblender or any other makeup sponge, make sure you do so with a light hand. This is the best way to ensure an even application especially if you want to layer your foundation for optimum coverage.

With a light-handed application using a makeup sponge, multiple layers of foundation and concealer will not look heavy. Also, this application technique increases the longevity of the look.

3. Use cream eyeliner for your waterline to open your eyes

Bigger “open” eyes are perfect for daytime looks, and you can create such an illusion using a cream-colored eyeliner.

Another nice thing about this makeup technique is it can make the color of your eyes pop and instantly diminish the look of tiredness, especially when you perk up your lashes with mascara.

4. Wear falsies

False lashes automatically give any makeup look a touch of elegance. They define the shape of the eyes and make you look more awake. Also, wearing falsies is a great fix for “wonky” eyeliner and less-than-perfect eyeshadow application.

It is worth noting, too, that wearing falsies will lessen the need for multiple coats of mascara that tend to make original lashes look like spider legs.

5. Apply highlighter from your brow bone to your temple and down to the highest point of your cheekbone

This simple technique creates the most beautiful glow whether you have a full face of makeup on or just a simple “no makeup” makeup look.

According to top editorial makeup artists, not only does this highlighting technique create such a gorgeous glow, but it also lifts up the face, giving you a healthier and more youthful appearance.

An additional tip for the best highlighter application: Do not be afraid to layer. Sweep highlighter onto the high points of your face, wet it down with a setting spray, dry a bit, apply highlighter again, and finally, set again with a setting spray. Fenty makeup artists swear by this highlighting technique.

6. Darken your brows instead of drawing them

You should only draw your eyebrows if you are like Monalisa and do not have them. If you have a lot of hairs for your brows, work with them instead of drawing on a new pair of brows (which a lot of Instagram-famous makeup gurus tend to do).

It will not only take you a much less time to beautifully frame your face with your brows this way, but it will also create the most flattering look. Use a “sketching” motion with your brow product to fill in sparse areas and use a "spoolie" to lessen the intensity of the product for more naturally dark brows.

7. Wear lip gloss

Lip gloss creates the look of kissable lips. It creates the illusion of plump puckers (an attractive benefit for people who have small and narrow lips), and it also provides much-needed hydration.

If you will use lip gloss as a lipstick topper, placing it at the center of your bottom lip will add a nice dimension to the look.

Easy, simple, beautiful

Gorgeous makeup looks are rarely about elaborate makeup techniques.

Most of the time, you just need to perform the fundamentals correctly. The simple techniques shared here take you back to the basics, but you can trust that they will not fail in creating flawless and long-lasting makeup looks for the best version of you.
