How DHT Hormones affect Hair Loss?

Hair loss can have a dramatic impact on the lives of the people and it can have different impacts on men and women. The most common type of hair loss that takes place in men is the male pattern baldness. The hair in this situation starts thinning slowly at the temple and crown area and eventually, the hair disappears. There can be multiple factors that cause the hair to fall off and these factors can be hormonal, unlucky genetics or environmental factors. DHT is the major factor amongst all.

What is DHT?

DHT stands for Dihydrotestosterone; it is an androgen hormone that causes hair follicles to miniaturize. It contributes to male pattern baldness by the age of 50 years. DHT is made from testosterone and it helps the body grow and regulate itself. It also plays an influential role in hair loss and it is more powerful than testosterone.

The Process of Miniaturization:

The miniaturization is a process in which DHT inhibits and diminishes the proper growth of hair follicles. This process eventually results in the lighter and finer hair development. DHT prevents the essential nourishment to the hair and as a result, it causes hair follicles to shrink. Due to the effects of miniaturization, the ‘anagen’ stage i.e. growing phase of hair gets shortened and the ‘telogen’ stage known as the resting phase is extended.

How DHT contributes in hair loss?

There is a great involvement of DHT in developing and maintaining sexual characteristics in men. It is also involved in the metabolic activities such as the development of blood cells.

  • Male Pattern Hair Loss:

The most genetically-susceptible hair follicles reside in the front and top of the scalp; thus male pattern baldness, also known as androgenic alopecia typically affects these areas at the initial stage. In androgenic alopecia, DHT is the major contributing factor.

  • Female Pattern Hair Loss:

In female pattern baldness, DHT can be one of the possible reasons. Female hair loss pattern is very complicated; rather than complete balding in women, hair loss tends to result in thinning.

Blocking DHT to prevent Hair Loss

Hair loss is a very common problem that affects most people at some point in their lives. Generally, hair thinning may occur at the age of 40s or 50s, but today, even the younger age is suffering from these issues badly. There are treatments available that block DHT to prevent further hair loss. In most of the men, blocking DHT does not result in producing any noticeable side effects. Thus, they can mitigate the effects of DHT by using DHT blockers or medications.

Is there any side effect of blocking DHT?

The vast majority of men that use DHT blockers generally don’t get serious side effects. Using drugs like finasteride and topical DHT blockers usually make the hair follicles thicker and healthier.

But there can be some rare cases, where the men do experience side effects from DHT blockers. These side effects can even lead to some potential downsides such as weak erections, higher testosterone or lower sex drive.

Now the question is whether you should use DHT blockers or not?

The drugs that block DHT are the powerful tools to slow down and to stop the problem of hair loss. You will be more successful in preventing hair loss if you start using DHT blockers at the earlier stages of hair loss. No amount of DHT blocking can bring your hairs back once they are completely gone.

Finasteride along with minoxidil and a shampoo is the best way to block DHT production in your scalp. Before moving further to any step, we recommend you visit a good clinic and getting a consultation with an experienced hair loss specialist.
